Happiness: Are Your Perceptions Creating Cataracts of the Soul?

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

Happiness and peace of mind seems to be on many people’s minds. After all, happiness and peace of mind are two elements that make for a life well lived. The challenge though is being clear enough to stay focused on principles that allow us to avoid getting pulled into the trap of “common knowledge”.

Common knowledge is often simply hand-me-down opinions that have been accepted as “just the way life is”. There is not a way life is that is universally true. What determines how you see life is the filter that you see the facts around you through, known as perception.

Perception is the lens we interpret through and if your brain has been unwittingly wired, particularly at a young age, to see life as threatening, this viewpoint will color the way that you see the world.

I’ve come to call these filters that keep us from connecting with our Authentic Self, sense of power, wisdom and peace of mind as “cataracts of the soul”. We all have many gifts and talents that are unique and would make a positive difference in the world.

Yet, once we develop perceptions about the world around us, our brain and nervous system keep us focused on the people, places and circumstances to keep our established perceptual systems in place. This is often the reason why change is challenging and why we stay stuck. It is difficult to have happiness, health, wealth and great relationships when your filter says, age brings disease, money is hard to get and people cannot be trusted.

The answer is to re-educate yourself while at the same time learning systems and processes that allow you to release the old perceptual memory from your nervous system/body. You can then learn how to more easily rewire and retrain your brain.

A practical example of how this plays out in your life can be seen from an article I read today about an “Aha” moment that Jada Pinkett Smith had. In the article you will note that she says that she micromanaged everything because:

Empowerment: What You Give Yourself You Receive From Others

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Empowering behaviors and beliefs can seem paradoxical to us because for the most part, what we have been taught is actually contrary to leading a truly confident and empowered life.

What we learn is not only contrary; it’s often outright backwards. We think that how we think about ourselves is independent of how others think of us. In fact, we think that what others think about us is more significant than what we think about ourselves.

For example, from the time we are two, we are unconsciously taught to seek for love, security and self-esteem outside ourselves. This is where we first start “looking for love in all the wrong places”. We are taught that the opinions of others are more important than our own, and that our significance comes from our associations, titles and material possessions.

Considering that these are all external to our very Being, it is no wonder that we give our power away regularly. We even make the mistake of trying to “get” love from others when we don’t even give it to ourselves.

Empowerment: It’s Time for a Marriage of the Minds – Intellect + Intuition

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

The time for empowerment for women – the world actually – is now. Can you sense that the energy in our world is changing? Things are not the same.

I think this is a good thing as I see room for growth and improvement in our society and in the way we treat others, the planet and ourselves in general. It is also time to integrate our power and stop breaking ourselves into different “parts” some which are less important than others and creating a sense of insufficiency and lack regarding our own worth or belittling the value that we place on our own gifts and talents.

Now, instead of focusing on what is “wrong” it is time to take your power back and learn how to get to where you want to go. As long as you stay focused on fear and what is wrong, your brain will help you to stay there. You see, what you focus on expands and what you resist persists.

This is just the way your mind and body work. Your brain does not judge your choices per se, it only brings to you, like a missile seeking machine, that which you truly expect and believe.

Also, we have been conditioned to only use our intellect that is operating only 10% of what runs our daily lives. You see, most of what runs our day-to-day operations is unconscious. We just don’t know what we don’t know and what we think is true, in general is based in lack thinking, competition and “survival of the fittest”.

Stay Healthy: 7 Reasons Why Worry is Dangerous to Your Health and Keeps You Disempowered

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

Staying healthy is the goal of most people. As I look at our healthcare system, it has never been as important as it is today to be proactive in staying healthy.

Between the expense healthcare and medication, the threat to your financial stability and the questionable “scientific” data that supports that taking a million, kazillion (I know this is not a valid term) drugs is acceptable, I’d say one had better do everything possible to maintain their health as naturally and as cost effectively as possible.

Did you know that there is a definite mind-body connection and that stress is related to the reason for 75-90% of all primary care visits to physicians? Actually, I could have told you this without any fancy statistics.

It just plain makes intuitive sense. When you are angry and upset, notice how your body feels. Notice how much more difficult it is to concentrate. Then notice how you feel when you are joyful and happy.

In fact, have your blood pressure checked as you blow a fuse. Have it checked when you are in a relaxed state. It is likely that it will be high with anger and normal to low when relaxed. A relaxed state is a healthy state. I want to pick on worry in this blog post today though, because it is so epidemic.

I had the clerk in my neighborhood grocery store yesterday, tell me in definite “I will not change my mind terms” that there were “no jobs” available for her son to obtain in all of the United States, and that he would have to leave the country to find a job in his field.

Unless he made horse and buggies or telegraph/typewriters, – you know, something we don’t even use anymore – I doubt that her statement is true.

Yet, she obviously looked worry and upset as I discerned her energy and noticed the contorted expression on her face. I’m going to give you 7 reasons why you don’t want to go there. Worry is essentially faith for what you DON’T want. Simple as that.

It hasn’t happened, the person is just imagining it to be happening or is expecting (faith) that it will happen. Why not expect the best? Or at least remain neutral. In a nutshell, people generally worry because we are conditioned to do so.

As a world, we have so trained our brain to live in fear and expecting the next disaster that our nervous system is always on alert to “fight, flight or freeze”. This is what the stress response is.

Career Transition and Change: Who Do You Think You Are?

Friday, April 9th, 2010

Career and business success depends on this question: Who do you think you are? Often this question is asked with an attitude, as in “you must think you’re somebody”. Well, yes, I do, and you should too.

Not only are you “somebody” you are unique, special and it’s time to stop playing small and letting the world around you define you. Since the default setting for the mindset of the world is so constricted, and limited, focused far more on lack than on abundance, if you plug into this viewpoint – you are bound for lack and struggle right out the gate.

In these times of change and flux, you had better get a grip on your mindset and learn to consciously manage yourself or you will be in for a heck of a bumpy journey. I used to be so worried about the opinions of others and micromanaging life that I was stressing myself out and creating unnecessary drama.

Like most people, I operated my mindset out of a worldview of fear. Well fear, unless it is due to truly life-threatening circumstances, is really only “Fictitious Evidence Affecting Reality”. It is psychological. This acronym that I created when I wrote my book “Empower Up and Play Big”, is based in neuroscience. Even many years ago, Albert Einstein said:

“Reality is an illusion; albeit a very persistent one”

Reality is an illusion in that it is not “the way it is”. It is relative, based on one’s perceptual system, the way we wire our visual system, our brain and nervous system. We first wire, then we continue to find the evidence from the “facts”, (our nervous system is masterful at this without our awareness) the events and information of the material world around us, and we create our own “story” based on our view of life.

Ego is an Enormous Growth Opportunity

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

Self Esteem, Ego, ConfidenceEgo used to be a term that I rarely heard except when someone was referring to arrogance as in “you have a big ego”. It was ambiguous at best. I find it interesting that I can actually now use that term in relation to neuroscience. “How so?” you may ask. Can you keep an open mind?

In times of change the learners will inherit the earth while the learned find themselves beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists” ~Eric Hoffer

Ego in Latin is translated “I”. It is the false “I” however, as it is the sense of self that is tied to the area of the brain that forms the “autobiographical memory”, or the story of who you THINK you are.

In my soon to be released book, “Empower Up and Play Big: Winning at Life From the Inside Out!” I refer to it as the “Mental Me”. It is the mental construct of your self-image. I have come to understand that it really is a “false self“, so to speak.

The “real you”, what I call the “Magnificent Me”, is the awareness, the consciousness, the spirit, or what quantum physics refers to as the “observer”. The one that can see the thought, sense the thought apart from the thought. The real you has all types of potential gifts and talents that you have not even begun to develop.  Not to get too convoluted here, this is the take home message: YOU are not your thoughts.

Thoughts are things, literally. Thought is energy strictly speaking. What you do with this energy as it flow through your perceptual system will ultimately determine the action you take which will lead you to your life’s destination. Now, if you have created an ego that has a low self-image and low self-esteem, an autobiographical memory that says you are not good enough or whatever, this is what will run your life and cause suffering.

The good news is, the more aware you become of HOW your powerful brain/mind/spirit work together and start to operate your life consciously, the more you will be able to take the misperceptions of your EGO and turn it into Enormous Growth Opportunities.

Empower Up and Rise Above Your Present Drama

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Empowerment, Confidence, EmpowerTransformation literally means to rise above form, or transcend “form”.  Form is what you are seeing in your world at the moment.  And here is what I’ve discovered: what I see was formed by my perceptions.  How I see life ultimately determines my experience of life.

My perceptual system is unique to me in many ways.  My thoughts, emotions and feelings create the vision and energy that forms how I experience life.  I know that most people still believe that we are hapless victims of circumstances.  I used to.

It has been so freeing to realize that this is just not the case.  While I cannot control everything in my world, I can control how I react to a great degree.  Here’s an as yet little known point that is powerful – how aware are you that the physical world starts within the quantum field of all that is?

In practical terms, everything is energy and then the invisible, tiny particles of waves and particles “gel” into form according to our consciousness.  Or, another way to look at it is what we expect to see because of how we perceive life, repeatedly shows up in our experience.  It becomes a “self-fulfilling prophecy.  While science shows there is no such thing as empty space and that the “observer” affects the movement of the quantum field, there is much controversy over “what is consciousness”?
