Inner peace is just that – peace inside. So why do we all to often go searching for it in external “things” and relationships? I fell into this trap for many years and I have finally come to experience and see that this is not the path to peace.
It took a while, and now I realize that the only thing that I can absolutely count on is – change. Even as you live life with awareness of Spirit, flexibility is central to a life of faith. Things don’t always go as planned and some experiences take time to understand the good on the other side of the seeming abyss.
Today another Halloween is passing. I used to feel sad, even while I was in the moment of experiencing fun with my children when they were much younger on this day. I dreaded that my children would “one day” be too old to go trick or treating with me – that they would rather be with their friends instead of me. It was a habit I had of focusing on lack instead of fully enjoying the present moment. This of course, blocked my full enjoyment in those now moments.
Fortunately, I eventually figured this out. The energy that we feel in the now moment is creating our future. This used to keep me in a perpetual state of dis-satisfaction as I could not really feel happiness to the extent that I could have. I could not really enjoy the pleasure of funny faces, costumes and laughter as I felt the melancholy feelings that “one day” they would leave.
Well, one day has arrived. My daughter drove off to go out with her friends, no déjà vu for her. My son even choose to skip going to the Northwestern Football game that he and my husband have season tickets for to be with his friends for Halloween. And me? – I’m here writing this blog post!

I find it challenging at times to go to the grocery store and hear nothing but disease messages like “did you get your flu shot”? It’s “cold and flu season again” (no such thing, literally). Or how about “you have a ____% chance of dying of breast cancer (yet statistically you have a much greater likelihood of never getting the disease in the first place, what about this?)
Do you notice that fear, fear, fear, is blasting all too often over the airways? Not to put my head in the sand, but walking about worrying about dying is no way to live.
Looking for your personal power?… here’s a hint – it’s an inside job!
“We all sit around in a circle and suppose while the secret sits in the the center and knows” ~ Robert Frost
Since I stopped believing in a “cold and flu” season I rarely “catch” one. If I’m stressed or tired and then feel symptoms coming on, virtually always, if I get a good nights sleep, meditate and relax, by the next day they are gone. Do not underestimate the power of belief. Fear is simply faith in what you do not want, generally speaking. I’m focusing my attention on peace as what you focus on expands. There are several paths that lead to peace, but ultimately, you can only truly find it from the inside out. Since the world can’t give it, the world can’t take it away.
Here are a few tips that can be useful:

Confidence as a survival skill is being called upon in our changing world in more ways than one. With all of the change in the work place, it is estimated that the largest area of job growth will be in the arena of small business and entrepreneurship.
I have always been an entrepreneur for my entire adult career and I can tell you that it will either build your confidence, or you will ultimately sink. It does not matter what your IQ is.
In fact, I’ve seen people with highly respected PhDs and MDs freeze like a doe in the headlight when it comes to getting out into the “real world” on their own and leaving behind the predictable world of academia or corporate America.
I recently heard that the dental department at the University of Chicago shut down and released all of their staff to the wind. They will have to either find new jobs, or start a new business or change professions. Either way, it will be a scary proposition if change is not easily dealt with.
Change can certainly be scary, but the key is not to run from the fear. Feel the fear and “do it anyway”. Granted this pep talk can be easier said than done. However, by learning new information on how your mind and brain really works, getting coaching and using tools that help you to release the negative conditioning that keeps you boxed in and playing small, you can rise to the occasion of our changing times.

Law of attraction is a term that is heard much more commonly now since the movie “The Secret” by Rhonda Bryne has been such a big hit.
I remember when I first became aware of the term at least ten years ago, it seemed a bit “out there”, but I found it interesting enough to begin to investigate it back then. The more I learned, the clearer it became that it was really not a new concept at all.
You see I realized that I had been attracting what I focused on with belief all of my life. The problem was, in those days, most of what I focused on was what I did not want! Actually, most people make this mistake.
For example, most people are focusing on fear, lack and the negative headlines about our economy and so it is no wonder that things continue to take a downward slide. I read everyday about the rise in stress and emotional depression. Is it any wonder?

Quantum Physics can substantiate that everything is energy – yes EVERYTHING. This includes you! Now about ten years ago, when I was in a different place, if someone started talking about energy, the judgment would be that it was “woo-woo” or “new age” (this is such a subjective term).
It was said in a spooky negative way in the circle of people that I knew then. Even now, there are still those who think that energy is something spooky or “other worldly”.
The fact is, you don’t know what you don’t know. This is why we as humans only use about 90% of our brains capacity; we are afraid of looking at or learning about anything new that does not neatly fit into our existing paradigm!
I was talking to someone recently who made this comment about us not using our brain, and when I shared with him some of the most recent findings in neuroscience, you can probably guess what his rather typical response was – “I don’t know if I can believe that”. This is so common.

Confidence is sorely needed with all of the change going on around us. Many people fear losing their jobs, not because they love what they do, but they fear change and worry about worse case scenarios. Wouldn’t it be great to jump out of bed on Monday morning with passion in your heart for what you will be doing?
This is what passion can do for you. When we are passionate about what we do it does not feel like “work”, it feels more like play. You could actually feel like “wow, you mean I can get paid for doing what I enjoy?” Yes, and all things really are possible – if you believe.
In our society, from the time we start kindergarten, we start hearing “what do you want to be when you grow up?”. I made sure I avoided asking my children this, as I did not want them to feel pressured to feel that they had to decide whether or not be a “doctor, lawyer or Indian chief” by the time they were seven. There’s no condemnation if you do this, just realize that we are unfolding as we grow. Wouldn’t it be great if we could learn to grow with the flow instead of presetting early on what we “should” be doing with our lives? To have the confidence to follow our hearts?

Self-mastery and empowerment is more than a “nice idea”. It can become as real as you are willing to make it happen for yourself. It is not about being lucky, and the journey to empowerment is a conscious choice, it will not just happen.
We all start our early life feeling like a victim or possessing “victim consciousness”. It seems that it is just a part of the human experience, and while it is possible that there are one or two exceptions out there, the rule is out the gate we have to develop our sense of personal power.
For the most part, most people have accepted the notion that their life is out of their control. I believe that this attitude is starting to shift. Perhaps it is out of necessity or for some out of desperation, but since we are living in a time of great turmoil and change, it has become evident that that job you are depending on, or that support you thought would always be there, can simply vanish overnight.
The truth is, this has always been the case. It is an illusion to think that we can control things outside of ourselves. The closest that we will ever come to controlling anything will be the ability to control our own mind, our choice of thoughts and what we will believe. The missing ingredient though is awareness.

Confidence and self-worth, regardless of what some psychologists say, does matter. Really now, if you think of yourself as acceptable and worthy, why would this be considered selfish?
In fact if you are comfortable in your own skin, you are at least less likely to be paranoid about yourself in relation to others and less likely to see the world as a scary, competitive place to live. This matters as far as your health is concerned as well. Think about this; in recent decades, as people become more focused “fighting” cancer, stress and the cancer rates have actually accelerated. This is related to the principle that what you focus on expands, even if you “don’t want” it. You are giving your creative energy to whatever you keep your attention on.
The more fearful and constricted you feel about yourself and life, the more disease, or, “dis-EASE” you are likely to experience. Here is an interesting quote I found from a Mayo Clinic internist who studies mind-body medicine:

Happiness is elusive for many people. One reason I say this is that I notice our media headlines via the Internet, or in passing by a newsstand, or just simply coming across statistics that show the rise of chronic disease in our society and the millions of prescriptions written for anti-depressants…the list could go on here.
There is obviously more than one reason. So, is happiness something that we are going to find outside of ourselves? Do not hold your breath! If you haven’t already noticed, there is an awful lot of drama going on in the world today.
The media is outright addicted to it. Thank goodness I have the power to turn it off! There are many people who would rather dwell on their personal woes and what is wrong with the world. Thank goodness I have the power to choose who I hang out with. I am not always in a perfectly happy, energetic, vibrant mood. Thank goodness I have the power and Grace to change my mind!
In fact, your ability to “change your mind” is the single most powerful option you have to experience happiness. It is not going to just show up in your life and any drama that is hanging out in your world first started showing up because of the way you allowed your mind to focus your attention.
You see, you are really not at the mercy of your environment. Unwittingly, we have been ingrained with beliefs that weaken us. We think that we are our thoughts. No, you are not your thoughts!

Confidence is not about acting a certain way; it is about being authentic. It is the confidence to be self-actualized and to stop trying to be another copycat of some media image that you’ve been manipulated into seeking.
This attempt to conform is really related to a deep-seated, unconscious belief in “survival of the fitness”. This is rooted in insecurity around safety and the need to be loved. While is it human to want to feel love and security, it is a distortion to seek it first outside of yourself.
You will not really ever transcend the search for security and love as long as you give your focus of power to people, places and things outside of yourself. You must first love yourself in order to “find” the security and love that you need.
I’ve learned this first hand. I grew up, real or not, perceiving that I did not quite “fit in” into my environment on many levels. While there was some factual examples of rejection going on in my world, being a child, the rejection felt almost life threatening. The issue for me and all of us is that many of our decisions about “how life is” are based on the intellectual understanding and memory of a three-year-old!
It could even come from old energetic memory patterns in our cellular memory and bio-energetic fields. You are hearing more and more about energy these days (and not just “green” energy), because we are entering a new era of understanding. The old way of doing things is collapsing as new understanding emerges.
